Instiki

I find it almost scary how fast it is once deployed. — SW

The docs say “Instiki lowers the barriers of interest for when you might consider using a wiki. It’s so simple to get running that you’ll find yourself using it for anything—taking notes, brainstorming, organizing a gathering.” The other day I was putting together a collection of files concerning an author I was reading/working on. I set up a little directory structure on my server and started making sub-directories for each of the author’s books and yet more sub-directories in each of those to house reviews of those books, store salient quotes from the books, collect relevant links, etc and then other directories where I could take my notes and piece together longer writing, with all this stuff eventually culminating in some essays on the writer. I realized pretty quickly that grep just wasn’t going to cut it and I didn’t want to take time away from collecting information figuring out how I should be collecting that information. Then I remembered the advise in the Instiki README.

It took about 1 minute:
  • wget the source
  • unpack it
  • run instiki.rb

and within 10 minutes everything I had done up until then was copied into the new wiki. Instiki has all the features I need, takes 1 minute to set up and it just works. I’m pretty sure I’ll be using it for a lot for quite some time. This changes everything. Cheers and thanks.Marcel Molina Jr 19-Sep-04

Amazing and more amazing. I can’t wait to use it!Mike Rundle

Just great! I was always looking around for a simple to install, simple to use, but with all the features I like Wiki. And here it is! Instiki is amazing… and it even ships with testcases! (I just have to look up where the name comes form; in german it sounds a bit like a bad smell).Daniel Flueck

Instiki is just plain beautiful. Just run instiki.rb and you have a fully working Wiki Web ready to go. Instiki’s UI is also the cleanest I’ve seen in a Wiki. Kudos to David for writing such an excellent piece of softwareBill Atkins

Instiki is a really cool wiki server from David Heinemeier Hansson. It is one of the easiest wiki servers to setup and run that I have seen.Jim Weirich

Instiki is the greatest Wiki ever! Why The Lucky Stiff

very cute and lightweight wiki… I installed this on my laptop, and it works like a dreamStephen Sykes

Its really fun to use InstikiDenis Mertz

I was looking for a wiki solution with Markdown support. I didn’t expect the only one that supports it to also be everything else I ever wanted!Cortland Klein

It’s not only a great Wiki, it’s a model for an easy to use programRich Seymour

I’ve never seen a Wiki this easy to set up, this easy to understand, as faithful to web standards and with code I can actually read. Brilliant!Rik Hemsley

Aside from the paper notebook I carry with me, Instiki is my primary place for writing and thinking. Super useful.—RS

I was looking for a way to organize my ideas the way I remember them. I have tried several wiki clones but they were either too bulky or too feature limited. Since I started using Instiki I never looked back.Walter Georgescu

Instiki is a fabulous program. The other apps that I tried out had some nice features but they were not as elegant. This is a very elegant solution.—MH

My favourite wiki, for sure. Creating multiple webs, customising CSS, using Textile, marvelling at the nice design; it’s so cool!Gavin Sinclair

The regular expression searching is fantastic. I just started learning to use regexes and I can’t believe how useful they are within Instiki. Great feature.

Instiki was so easy to set up on my Mac OS X system, when I needed a Wiki for my server I knew exactly which one to use.—George Hotelling

I’ve tried several Wikis for taking notes – too much overhead to set up! With Instiki – about three clicks and it’s done (had to d/l and install Ruby). Also, now that I’ve used it a bit, it’s a good fit with the Neo Alphsmart. Also, since Instiki also lead me to Ruby and Ruby on Rails, it may be a really big net win!—Tait Stevens

I…uhm…. LIKE IT!—Li

I’ve been using PHP Wiki for a couple of years, wanting to upgrade but hesitating the hassle. Instiki is sooo much easier, good looking and feature rich. And it’s in Ruby On Rails!Marius Mathiesen

I’m amazed at how compact it is. Ruby On Rails, WEBrick… all in one script. I find myself evangelizing Instiki constantly.James

It’s super cool !—Arun

On Rails too!marekj

Instiki is quite wonderful. I had it running in seconds, on Mac OS X 10.4.3. One gripe: the ugly menu bar presence (the word ‘Wiki’) of an otherwise very pretty application. I’ll see if I can come up with an icon.Hiram

A simple and elegant wiki. If only the published content had the Search and the other links enabled…The published site should just have the edits disabled and everything else kept as is. I see that in the ‘Feature Request’ page (atleast the Search), any updates on these requests ?. ThanksNeelesh

Awesome program. I love its simplicity, and its aesthetic design is so nice it puts other wikis to shame. —Shane Celis

I like it! It took me only minutes to configure it and I now ”host” it on a USB memory stick so it goes wherever I go (distinct lack of access to a host server). Thanks!—Lance

Wow!
